Sept. 22 spells commUNITY entertainment
If you really want to learn how our commUnity opens its heart, come to Valley Churches United Mission’s upcoming 40th Anniversary Ruby Gala.
Scheduled for 6 p.m.- 10 p.m., Friday, Sept. 22, at Roaring Camp’s Bret Harte Hall, the fun evening promises good conversation, stories of giving, and a silent auction.
“Our past holiday galas were much smaller,” says Lynn Robinson, executive director, adding the invitation list has expanded from 140 to 200 guests. “This year, we will have a whole different feeling.”
A rich history of giving
Valley Churches United Missions (VCUM), founded in response to the disastrous storms and Love Creek slide of 1982, serves residents in need in San Lorenzo Valley, Scotts Valley, Summit, and Bonny Doon areas.
VCUM has raised and distributed more than $18 million in assistance and reaches over 500 households in need monthly. Volunteers have contributed countless hours over the years, resulting in a thriving community resource and outreach agency.
Previous galas were for volunteers only, but the entire community is welcome this year. For more information and to register, go here. Early bird discounts of $75 are available until Tuesday, Sept. 5. After that date, tickets are $100.
VCUM: More than disaster relief
Relying on the kindness of donors, VCUM provides a year-round food pantry, as well as helping qualified residents with rent and utility bills.
“It’s a circle of gratitude,” says Lynn. “Hand up, not hand out.”
But VCUM doesn’t stop there. At the beginning of school, they hand out backpacks; during Thanksgiving, they distribute turkeys and all the trimmings, and at Christmas, the kids get toys, and parents receive Safeway gift cards.
“Without donors, VCUM would cease to exist,” remarks Lynn.

Come and hear our stories and learn more about an organization that provides vital services and “bridges the gap” for those in need during times of crisis.
Bruno’s Bar & Grill will provide appetizers and a delicious buffet. The festivities will include a raffle, auction, and live rockin’ music by the Joint Chiefs. In addition, there will be presentations of the Angel of the Year awards as we recognize outstanding community leaders and volunteers in our commUnity who give back and serve.
Wine, beer, and spirits will be available for purchase. The master of ceremonies will be our favorite KSBW newsman (now retired), Phil Gomez.
