THE COFFIS BROTHERS AND SUGAR BY THE POUND TO PLAY A LOCAL BENEFIT CONCERT AT THE NEWLY RENOVATED ODDFELLOWS HALL – PRESENTED BY BLACKBIRD PRESENTS AND BCRPD FOUNDATION

Boulder Creek, CA – The Coffis Brothers and Sugar by the Pound will play a special benefit concert at the newly renovated Odd Fellows Hall in historic Boulder Creek on Saturday, April 23rd at 7:00 PM. Proceeds for the event will benefit Laurel Hillerson-Spear, a Boulder Creek resident and mother, who, at 32 was diagnosed with stage IV cancer.

On May, 2014, Laurel was diagnosed with the terminal cancer and due to the rapid and wide spread of her cancer, doctors have little hope for a cure and gave her 2.5 years to live. She is supported by her loving partner, Steve, and her beautiful young daughter, Fiona.

Laurel is a life-long member of the Santa Cruz community, and has resided in San Lorenzo Valley since 2009. She has worked in mental health and homeless services since 2005. She currently works at the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz as a Community Outreach and Development Coordinator for their Community Connection Program. She is also an active volunteer. She has always been an advocate and a voice for social change and justice. Her fighting spirit and sense of humor have served her well thus far on her cancer journey, as she has undergone five major surgeries, multiple rounds of chemotherapy, and radiation treatment.

Laurel finds her new purpose in life is to be an advocate for cancer warriors. She loves speaking to other young mothers who are newly diagnosed and she helps them to see their own strength, which is more powerful than any medicine. Laurel has found a new purpose in life is to be an advocate for cancer warriors. ABOUT THE BANDS:
The Coffis Brothers:
The Coffis Brothers & The Mountain Men are a rootsy rock n’ roll band born and raised in the Santa Cruz Mountains.  Songwriters Jamie and Kellen Coffis’ blend of folk, blues, R&B and straight ahead rock are evidence of an upbringing spent listening to all of the right records from Tom Petty, Neil Young, and The Beatles.

Sugar by the Pound:
Sugar by the Pound came together in the Spring of 2014 in The Santa Cruz Mountains and is one of the only all-female bluegrass bands, not only in the area, but for miles around. Their combination of traditional bluegrass music, country-style blues, honkytonk, and classical influences hits home with a wide audience. The players–Erin Valdivia on vocals and guitar, Cristy Aloysi on vocals, mandolin and guitar, Sarah Farrell Mackassey on vocals and bass, and Alison Steele on vocals and banjo are classically trained musicians as well as campfire poets. From California, New York, Indiana, and Virginia, Sugar by the Pound brings East and West Coast sounds together forming something truly unique yet wonderfully nostalgic!
