The Felton Farmers’ Market rolls out the red carpet for the 2023 season on May 2. Weekly on Tuesdays, 1:30-5:30pm, a bustling market takes over the St. John’s Church parking lot. This year, May through October 24, regional farms, new and long-loved, pull up to this sweet corner of Felton. Here Romano beans overflow wooden boxes, heirloom tomatoes paint the rainbow and Blenheim apricots melt in the mouth in their perfect sweet-tart way. Walk the aisles and find seasonal-centric Penny Ice Creamery flavors like strawberry pink peppercorn, Roli Roti rotisserie chicken dripping over crispy potatoes, icy beverages and enough produce to stock your fridge and cupboards for the week.
Located in the downtown corridor off Highway 9, with redwood trees for a backdrop, the Felton Market has been running for nearly 40 years. Six months of the year a quality collection of regional farms and food businesses throw up their tents to sell a colorful array of fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, eggs, artisanal bread, seafood and other staple foods. Connecting residents directly with local farms, the Felton Market is an essential part of the regional food system as well as a resource for nutritious organic foods, agricultural education and pure fun.
This year we continue to build up the FoodShed Project Event Series, hosting four events that highlight the bounty that farms bring to our tri-county region. As tradition goes, we host a Strawberry Shortcake Give Away on opening day! Come out for JCG, Live Earth and Vasquez Farm strawberries with whipped cream stacked on Beckmann’s Bakery famous shortbread. Every week that follows will offer a family friendly atmosphere with live music and seating. The Market Match program helps EBT (CalFresh) users stretch their dollars, matching the first $10 of EBT with an additional $10 in tokens for fresh fruits and vegetables.
FoodShed Project events happen throughout the season bringing community partners, workshops, prizes, activities and all kinds of fun. The SC Public Libraries bicycle book mobile is back for a series of scavenger hunts and the educational team at Mountain Feed & Farm Supply will join us too. Put the Summertime (June 27), Applefest (September 12) and the Pumpkin Decorating Bonanza (October 17) on your calendar and the Tuesday Felton Farmers’ Market back in your weekly routine.
