After a detour to Southern California and the East Coast, Scotts Valley local Kevin Ma is back in the community where he grew up.

These days, Kevin is practicing general dentistry at the office of John Stevens DDS at 21 Mount Hermon Rd. Unit H.

“It’s good to be home,” says Kevin. “My parents and siblings live here.”

The road to his current practice had its share of zigs and zags. Not to mention its fair share of miles. Oh, and not to mention meeting his lovely wife Lindsay when he was studying as an undergraduate.

After attending Baymonte Christian School and being in the first graduating class at Scotts Valley High School, Kevin picked up and moved to Santa Barbara to earn his degree in biology at UC Santa Barbara.

From there he moved to New Jersey to attend school and graduate with a master’s degree in biomedical sciences. During this time, he shadowed various doctors and dentists to gain perspective on what day-to-day work was like.

“I knew I wanted to go into healthcare,” he says. “(But) It seemed like the work-life balance was better in dentistry. The doctors I observed were working all the time.”

So, he packed his car up again and traveled across the countryending up at the Western University College of Dental Medicine in Pomona. There he earned his doctorate and set his eyes on returning to Scotts Valley.

“It was nice to be able to come home after all that time in school,” he says.

Since moving back home, he and Lindsay, who works as a labor and delivery nurse at Dominican Hospital, have added two boys to the family, Jameson 3.5 months and Henry 15 months.

Having achieved his preferred work-life balance, Kevin, who works four days a week, can spend hours and hours on family time.

When not down on the floor playing with his boys, Kevin enjoys hiking, traveling, skiing, and going for walks.

Welcome home Kevin!
