Beloved Santa Cruz County ice cream business The Penny Ice Creamery is hard at work on a new location in Scotts Valley with an expected summer opening. The shop will be one of several locally owned businesses, including the Hangar Tap Room and Grill, in a new development located on Mount Harmon Road near Skypark.

Penny founders Kendra Baker and Zachary Davis are thrilled to be bringing their locally made ice cream, which focuses on organic sourcing and seasonal flavors, to the Scotts Valley community. They are also having a lot of fun creating a space with it’s own special character.

“Our focus is on creating an amazing experience for the people that visit us.” says Baker. “It’s great to be working with our friends at Nielsen Studios again to create a space with indoor and outdoor options for people to grab an ice cream and enjoy here or take on a walk.”

Certainly the walkability to Skypark had a lot to do with selecting this location as well as the local roots of the other businesses in the project.

“I’ve spent many days at Skypark with my kids as they’ve grown up,” Davis recalls. “Meeting up with their cousins from down the street, launching model rockets; now I look forward to sharing a comforting ice cream with them when they fall off the monkey bars!”

As with their other locations Baker and Davis look forward to highlighting Scotts Valley with their hyperlocal sourcing.

“We already partner with farms in the area such as Abounding Harvest Mountain Farm out Glenwood Drive,” says Baker. “I look forward to deepening our sourcing relationships in Scotts Valley and creating some special flavors!”

Baker and Davis are also eyeing collaborations with their neighbors at the Hangar Tap Room and Grill, due to open in the fall, where they certainly expect a stout beer float to make an appearance.

Construction is well underway, including the capacity to make ice cream on site, and Baker and Davis hope to be open by the end of July or early August. In the meantime they participate in the Tuesday Felton Farmers’ Market and are open seven days a week at their other locations around the county.

The Penny Ice Creamery is the only ice cream shop in Santa Cruz making delicious ice cream completely from scratch in house. Flavors change with the seasons, and feature locally farmed and organic ingredients.
