March 30, 2014 – Yesterday, about 1,500 Scotts Valley residents were without power for about an hour along Scotts Valley Drive and in the Granite Creek area in what appears to be the result of a crow coming in contact with electrical wires. Some residents reported hearing a loud boom right at the time of the power failure. Power went off about 4:45pm and was restored sometime before 6pm.

According to a study by The Edison Electric Institute, it is estimated that animals and birds coming into contact with power lines account for about 11% of power failures in the United States.

The My Scotts Valley Facebook page was buzzing with residents sharing information about the power failure with some reporting no failures and others reporting a quick flickering of power.
